August 6, 1968- Police confrontation
On the night of April 6, 1968 Bobby Hutton had died, he was killed by oakland police officers. Hutton and Cleaver were leading an ambush on the Oakland Police, during which two officers were seriously wounded by multiple gunshot wounds. The reason for the ambush on the police was because of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4th. The ambush, which Cleaver admitted he led turned into a shootout between the Panthers and Oakland Police in a house in west oakland. 90 minutes into the ambush Hutton and Cleaver surrendered after the police had thrown a tear-gas in the building. Cleaver was wounded so Hutton decided to leave the building first, once he stepped outside of the building he was shot 12 times and died instantly. He was just about to reveal to police that he was unarmed but it was too late. Police claimed that Hutton tried to run away but Cleaver said that was not true, a witness police officer said “What the Police did to Hutton was a first degree murder.”
